The Biggest Holes in the World

The world’s biggest hole Mirny Diamond Mine is located in Russia
The gaint hole is actually a diamond mine in Eastern Siberia near the town Mirna. It is 525 meters deep and 1.25 km in the diameter.

The following truck loader is one of the biggest in the world - lenth 13.36 meters, width 7.78 meters and height 6.65 meters.

This gaint machine appears just a small point in the next image.

The red arrow in the photo below is pointing to a huge truck.

The suction above the hole resulted in several helicopter crashes, so all flight above the hole is prohibited now.

A View from Satellite.

Kimberley Big Hole - South Africa
Apparently the largest ever hand-dug excavation in the world, this 1097 metre deep mine yielded over 3 tonnes of diamonds before being closed in 1914.
The amount of earth removed by workers is estimated to total 22.5 million tonnes.

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah
This is supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth. extraction began in 1863 and still continues today, the pit increasing in size constantly. in its current state the hole is 3/4 mile deep and 2.5 miles wide.

Great Blue Hole, Belize
Situated 60 miles off the mainland of Belize is this incredible ‘geographical phenomenon’ known as a Blue Hole. There are numerous Blue Holes around the world but none as stunning as this one.
At surface level the near perfectly circular hole is 1/4 mile wide, the depth in the middle reaching 145 metres. obviously the hole is a huge hit with divers. read more here.

Giant Drain Hole in Langelsheim (Germany)

Largest Drain Hole in the World - Glory Hole, Monticello Dam
A Glory Hole is used when a dam is at full capacity and water needs to be drained from the resevoir. This is the glory hole belonging to Monticello Dam in North California and it’s the largest in the world, its size enabling it to consume 14′400 cubic feet of water every second.

The distance from the funnel to the exit point - which is situated in the south side of the canyon - is about 700 feet.

The hole can be seen at the top left of the photo above. if you were to jump in for some reason your slightly damp body would shoot out near the bottom of the dam (below).

Hole on Google Maps.

Diavik Diamond Mine, Canada
This incredible mine can be found 300km Northeast of Yellowknife in Canada. The mine is so huge and the area so remote that it even has its own airport with a runway large enough to accomodate a Boeing 737. it also looks equally as cool when the surrounding water is frozen.

Sinkhole, Guatemala
A sinkhole is caused when water (usually rainwater or sewage) is soaked up by the earth on a large scale, resulting in the ground collapsing.
These photos are of a sinkhole which occured early this year in Guatemala. the hole swallowed a dozen homes and killed at least 3 people.

Officials blamed the monster of a hole on a ruptured sewage pipe.

Spit On a Stranger

Ever since I started blogging tattoos, I like to carry a folder with printouts and my camera with me, wherever I go.

So on Wednesday night, when I realized I had until midnight to return a video to Blockbuster (Rescue Me, Season 2, Discs 1-3, all unwatched) or face stiff penalties, I dragged my stuff with me, just in case. At that time of night (11:30 PM), I figured opportunities would be slim to none.

Let me clarify, I saw some cool tattoos, but figured it would not necessarily be the best idea to ask bar patrons out of the blue on the street to participate.

Anyway, video returned, happy with just a shot of a new look from The Loneliest Lamp Post in Bay Ridge, I walked past, near the stroke of midnight, a harmless looking gentleman unchaining his bicycle . At first glance, he looked like he had a bicycle tattoo on his right forearm.

Not quite. Instead he had this:

Well, obviously, he agreed to participate in Tattoosday. So, what is this?

Well, the host, named Matt, offered up the following explanation (loosely paraphrased here). The tattoos is based on the cover art for Spit on a Stranger, a 1999 EP by the indie rock band Pavement. Take a look:

Matt is a resident of Williamsburg, but works in Bay Ridge. In retrospect I marvel at his midnight bike commute, although I hope he just rides to the nearest train station. Matt's tattoo was adapted from the Pavement EP, which was one of the band's final records. He says he gets a lot of comments and questions about it, and that people interpret it differently, yet all seem to be in the right ballpark when coming to their own understanding of it. Matt studied political philosophy in school and appreciates the vagueness of the piece, and the fact that it is able to be so widely interpreted by others.

This work was inked at Cherry Bomb Tattoo in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Thanks to Matt for talking to me and letting me take a picture so late in the evening.
